DUTCHMALAKKA

In collaboration with The University Nottingham, Malaysia. Supported by Tourism Melaka Malaysia and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

With multiple lock-downs during 2020-2021, this online exhibition was developed to showcase the Dutch heritage of Malaysia. The impetus of the exhibition began with the question "What did the Dutch leave behind?" Dennis Dewitt, author of 'History of the Dutch in Malaysia' responded"they left people like me behind!"

Dennis' story is similar to the Peranakan story. Generations of assimiliation, integration, adapation make this small remaining Dutch-Eurasian community, part of our Malaysian story.

Interviews with six families who can trace their Dutch-Eurasian roots to Melaka were conducted and documented over Zoom. The work was presented as an online and on-ground exhibition together with other game components done by final year and interning students.
